1. No Experience
With the industry the way it is today, employers have a large pool of candidates to choose from when hiring for a job. Those with no or little experience will often be bypassed in favor of those who have worked on the rigs extensively. People with no experience also pose a risk for companies as many do end up abandoning their jobs once they realize what rig life entails. One solution to this is to find work at an onshore company to build up your experience. Alternatively, look into offshore jobs in catering or cleaning. These may not pay as well but will prove to potential employers that you understand what is required of you and won’t abandon them.
2. No Certifications
In the past, many oil and gas workers were trained on the job; however, this is rarely the case anymore. Nowadays most job seekers will need to pay for training in order to receive the qualifications they need. Many companies now require candidates to have completed their certifications before they apply for a job. The easiest way to overcome this hurdle is to learn a technical trade such as mechanics, electrical work or plumbing. You can then use this knowledge to gain jobs offshore. Because of this now being the required route to work, a number of scholarships and financial bursaries are available for those who need them.
3. No References
When hiring, a lot of companies will ask their current contractors whether they know anyone seeking work. The main reason for this is that, again, rig life is not something that anyone can handle, and it’s better for a company to know in advance whether an employee will stick with them for the full course of the job. In addition, referred candidates tend to be easier and quicker to hire. The solution here is to network. Seek out forums, organizations and websites that target offshore workers and make your voice heard. While it won’t necessarily land you a job straight away, it definitely won’t hurt your chances and may help you to make connections that can help you in the future.
Finding work in the oil and gas industry is extremely competitive and it doesn’t look like it will change any time soon. That said, if you can find an opening and prove your worth, you could be looking at a successful, long term career.
